How About “NBC News Plus?”

Responding to Lost Remote’s “What’s in a brand?” post after Friday’s MS/NBC announcement, several commenters had interesting things to say:

MSNBC is clearly in need of rebranding its on-air identity so the time has come to make that decision. My verdict is go for the name change to the NBC News Channel. However, msnbc.com should keep its identity because of brand recognition and the fact that NBC is still aligned to Microsoft.

An interesting dilemma, the MSNBC name on the Web is too associated with success to change but the MSNBC name on television is too associated with failure to keep. This may be the rare case where an inconsistency really is the best strategy. Life works on the margins sometimes.

Ask an average MSNBC.com reader what site they turn to for news and they’ll probably call MSNBC.com “MSN.” The actual URL (www.msnbc.msn.com) and sharing of content with MSN have already weakened the MSNBC.com brand name, so changing it could help.

Here’s the new name: NBC News Plus.
