Democrats’ House Sit-In: ‘The Story Leading the Day’

By Mark Joyella

The dramatic sit-in by Democrats in the House of Representatives continued into Thursday morning.

“This was the story leading the day,” said Politico’s Rachel Bade of the protest dismissed by Republicans as nothing more than a “publicity stunt.”

The protest, centered around Democrats’ insistence that the House vote on gun control legislation, was carried live via Periscope when cameras in the House were turned off–considered a power shift for Congress, where control of television images has long been a perk of the party in power.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said the images carried live on C-SPAN and other networks looked bad for Republicans. “Paul Ryan said that it was nothing but a publicity stunt. If that’s the case, it’s a damn good publicity stunt. And it also happens to be a publicity stunt that has 90 percent of Americans behind it.”

“You look at these images, it’s not good for the Republican party,” Scarborough said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday. “This is a bad scene for Republicans.”
