‘He’s in My Head Every Day, Every Interview’

NBC’s Meet the Press paused this morning, noting that Saturday marked seven years since the sudden death of Tim Russert. “I didn’t feel as if we should let this weekend go by without mentioning it,” said Chuck Todd, describing the years as feeling “like seven minutes, seven days.”

Andrea Mitchell said “he’s in my head every day, every interview.”

Todd also told the story of how Russert created Meet the Press’ enduring tagline:

But his presence and his legacy lives on in one very particular moment that you hear all the time. It’s probably his most endearing legacy here at Meet the Press. It’s the catchphrase that he came up with. He came up with it at the last minute on a Saturday night before the first show he ever did. And it goes like this: “If it’s Sunday, it’s Meet the Press.”
