Here’s Tom Brokaw’s Legacy, Off Camera

By Chris Ariens

Tom Brokaw, who celebrates 50 years with NBC News this year, hosted an intimate luncheon at 30 Rock last week to honor past and present recipients of the Brokaw Scholarship Program.

Nine scholarship recipients and their parents, many of whom remain NBC employees, celebrated their achievements along with NBCU CEO Steve Burke, NBC News chairman Andy Lack, NBC News president Deborah Turness and MSNBC president Phil Griffin.

Brokaw discussed how the scholarship, now in its 18th year, is meant to foster one generation giving to the next. Each of the recipients also told their story. It was the first time Brokaw and NBC held this kind of gathering.

NBC News established the Brokaw Scholarship Program to honor Brokaw’s 30 years of service to NBC News. The scholarship, co-funded by Brokaw and NBCU, benefits the children of full-time employees of NBC News and MSNBC. The program has awarded 41 students a total of $250,000.
