Here’s How TV, Digital News Outlets Are Covering Midterm Elections Day

The 2018 midterm elections are finally here, which, based on what you’ll find below, is being treated by the television news networks as though it was part-presidential election, part-Super Bowl.

If you’re a TV and/or digital news junkie, there will be more than enough midterms coverage to keep you glued to your televisions or device du jour on Tuesday, and into Wednesday.

Here are each network’s respective coverage plans for the 2018 midterms on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

First, the broadcast networks:

 

ABC:

Chief anchor George Stephanopoulos will lead coverage from ABC News Election Headquarters in New York beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

  • ABC News’ podcast Start Here, hosted by Correspondent Brad Mielke, will provide extensive coverage in the lead up, day of and the days following the 2018 midterm election.
  • ABC NewsOne, the affiliate news service of ABC News, will provide full coverage with correspondents Stephanie Ramos and Kenneth Moton reporting from Capitol Hill, Travers reporting from the White House, correspondents Marci Gonzalez and Maggie Rulli reporting on key races across the country, and political director Rick Klein providing analysis. NewsOne provides news content and services for more than 200 ABC affiliates and international news partners.

CBS:

  • The CBS News Congressional Desk will be led by chief congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe.
  • CBS This Morning Saturday co-host Anthony Mason will provide analysis of CBS News Exit Polls from across the country.
  • CBS News’ Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett and White House correspondent Weijia Jiang will also be contributing to the political coverage.

NBC:

Lester Holt and Savannah Guthrie lead NBC’s coverage, joined by Chuck Todd.

  • NBC News and MSNBC will broadcast live coverage of the 2018 midterm elections, The Vote: America’s Future, anchored from NBC News world headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
  • Rockefeller Center will transform to Democracy Plaza on Election Night as 30 Rock lights up in red, white and blue and programming streams on screens flanking the building.
  • An augmented reality map will display over the skating rink as NBC News calls each race.
  • Coverage will air live from:
    • 9 pm – 11 pm ET
    • 8 pm – 10 p.m. CT
    • 7 pm – 10 p.m. MT
    • 9 pm – 11 p.m. PT
    • The eastern and central time zones will receive additional updates after local news

  • On Sunday, Nov. 4, Meet the Press with Chuck Todd originates live from NBC News Election Headquarters in New York with a political panel of NBC News and MSNBC anchors and contributors.
  • Today will provide full coverage with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb on Election Day and the morning after.
  • NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt broadcasts from NBC News Election Headquarters on Monday, Nov. 5 and Tuesday, Nov. 6.
  • Steve Kornacki will be on set breaking down the details of key races with his now famous “Big Board,” which re-launched with an all-new look using cutting-edge software developed by the NBC News Digital product and technology teams.
  • Stephanie Ruhle will host a pre-show airing across all NBC News digital properties from 7 p.m. ET – 8 p.m. ET, with NBC News coverage simulcasting afterwards and through the night.
  • Katy Tur will report from the field, as well NBC News correspondents Catie Beck, Garrett Haake, Kasie Hunt, Chris Jansing, Steve Patterson, Cal Perry, Morgan Radford, Gadi Schwartz, and Jacob Soboroff as well as NBC News political reporters Shaquille Brewster, Leigh Ann Caldwell, Vaughn Hillyard, Mike Memoli, Heidi Przybyla, and Ali Vitali will report live from key locations across the country, focusing on the candidates and the crucial issues impacted by 2018 midterm results. PBS:

Judy Woodruff will anchored PBS NewsHour coverage.

  • PBS NewsHour will present live coverage of the 2018 Midterm Elections on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 starting at 8 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings).
  • The special broadcast will be anchored by managing editor Judy Woodruff, with a panel of studio guests to include syndicated columnist Mark Shields, New York Times columnist David Brooks, Cook Political Report national editor Amy Walter, editor and publisher of American Greatness Chris Buskirk, MoveOn.org senior adviser Karine Jean-Pierre, and PBS NewsHour Capitol Hill correspondent Lisa Desjardins.
  • Joining NewsHour’s coverage remotely will be PBS NewsHour White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor at the White House; presidential historian Michael Beschloss; former DHS official Juliette Kayyem; Wilson Center Kennan Institute global fellow Nina Jankowicz; PBS NewsHour Weekend special correspondent Jeff Greenfield; and PBS NewsHour correspondents Amna NawazWilliam BranghamJeffrey Brown, and John Yang in the field and in Washington.
  • The special will also include reporting throughout the night on local and state elections in coordination with local PBS and NPR stations.

TELEMUNDO:

Jose Díaz-Balart, Julio Vaqueiro and Felcidad Aveleyra will lead the network’s midterms coverage.

  • Noticias Telemundo announced details of El Voto, Nuestro Futuro Latino, its coverage of the Nov. 6 state and legislative elections.
  • Led by Emmy and Peabody Award winning anchor José Díaz-Balart and presenters Julio Vaqueiro and Felicidad Aveleyra, with the support of correspondents, presenters and analysts across the country, El Voto, Nuestro Futuro Latino will offer special programming leading up to the elections as well as comprehensive Election Day coverage on Tuesday, November 6.
  • The historic coverage effort, featuring expert analysis, voter testimony, exit poll and real time results, opinion studies, social media trends and original digital content, will be produced in collaboration with the Telemundo Station Group and NBC News.
  • “These elections could change our future,” said Díaz-Balart.  “Tuesday’s outcome could shift the country’s political balance and with it, the role of Latinos in the United States. Noticias Telemundo will be there to document the process and analyze the impact of the results on our community.”

El Voto, Nuestro Futuro Latino programming will include:

  • Sunday, Nov.4 at 5:30 p.m./4:30 C: Enfoque Edición Especial, Nuestro Futuro Latino.  Two days before the elections, José Díaz-Balart will tell us what to expect as he joins experts in analyzing the most important races and potential scenarios.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 6: Noticias Telemundo’s coverage will begin at 7 a.m. with Un Nuevo Día and continue throughout the day with constant updates and a prime time special presenting real-time results.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 6: Real-time coverage by the Noticias Telemundo digital team on NoticiasTelemundo.com and its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages, including a Viewing Party led by Noticias Telemundo senior correspondent Vanessa Hauc at 11 p.m./10 C.
  • On Election Day, the Telemundo stations also will provide real-time election results on their digital platforms and apps. Local newscasts will feature in-depth political analysis about the balance of power in Congress and among key statewide races, and how political changes may affect local communities. The Telemundo stations local newscasts will also feature reports from the stations’ Washington, D.C. bureau.
  • The stations election day coverage follows months of extensive, in-depth reporting about statewide and local races, ballot issues, Hispanic opinion polling and civic engagement campaigns aimed to inform, empower and engage Spanish-speaking and Hispanic audiences ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

UNIVISION:

Jorge Ramos and Ilia Calderón will lead Univision’s election night coverage.

  • Coast-to-coast Election Night live coverage will begin on Noticiero Univision at 6:30 p.m. ET and continue in the 11:30 p.m. ET broadcast (with special editions for the West Coast, with times TBD)
  • At 9:00 p.m. ET (in a special East Coast-only broadcast) and then at 1:00 a.m. ET/PT (coast to coast), Ramos and Calderón will host a special election night program. Titled Noticias Univision Presenta:  El Poder en Juego (Univision News Presents: Power in Play), the special will bring viewers the most complete and detailed last-minute electoral information—from state-by-state projections and real-time results to in-depth commentary on House, Senate, and Governor races, key ballot issues, and topics of special interest to Hispanic viewers.
  • During the course of Election Night coverage, Ramos and Calderón will be joined by Univision News anchors Enrique Acevedo, Felix de Bedout and Patricia Janiot, as well as by political analysts and special guests, among them Democratic analyst Fabian Nuñez, Rep.   • A team of Univision News correspondents will report live from key states and campaign headquarters across the nation: Janet Rodriguez will be in Washington D.C, Blanca Rosa Vilchez at Sen. BBC:

Katty Kay and Christian Fraser will present a special election results show from Washington.

  • BBC News will be providing wide-ranging coverage of the 2018 Congressional midterm elections across television, radio and online, with more than a dozen correspondents reporting in three languages from ten states and territories. Coverage will be anchored from Washington, where Katty Kay and Christian Fraser will present a special results show.
  • BBC World News, the BBC’s global 24-hour news channel, will have correspondents speaking with voters and candidates and monitoring results in states with key races: Arizona, California, Florida, New Jersey, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. Several presenters will also be working out of the BBC’s Washington, D.C. bureau on election night, including BBC North America Editor Jon Sopel, who will also be co-presenting Today, the BBC’s flagship morning radio news programme, available in the UK and around the world on the BBC iPlayer.

BLOOMBERG:

David Westin will lead Bloomberg’s coverage.

  • Westin will anchor coverage alongside White House correspondents Shannon Pettypiece and Toluse Olorunnipa airing on Bloomberg Television and Radio.
  • Chief Washington correspondent Kevin Cirilli will provide real-time results and analysis and the network will have reporters across the country reporting from key races.
  • Bloomberg’s U.S. Newsdesk leader Joe Weisenthal will be joined by market watchers including Bloomberg’s John Authers to provide key insight.
  • For a global perspective, Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait will join from Bloomberg’s New Economy Forum in Singapore with reaction from global business leaders.

CNBC:

  • CNBC Digital will offer comprehensive coverage from its Politics team all day Tuesday and Wednesday, covering the House and Senate as well as gubernatorial races.
  • The site will also offer stories on how changes to the House and/or Senate leadership will impact the markets and various industries.
  • CNBC TV will cover the midterms during Business Day on Tuesday and will begin coverage on Wednesday with a special edition of Squawk Box starting at 5 a.m. ET.

CNN:

Wolf Blitzer, Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper will lead the network’s coverage from its Washington bureau, beginning at 5 p.m. ET.

  • On Election night, CNN will provide viewers with comprehensive coverage and real-time results of the midterm elections, which will determine who will control both chambers of Congress.  The network’s team of anchors, correspondents, analysts and commentators will provide special coverage from the nation’s capital and report from across the country.
  • Joining Blitzer, Tapper and Cooper will be CNN chief political correspondent Dana Bash, who will be tracking the Senate races and CNN senior political reporter Nia-Malika Henderson will be covering the gubernatorial races around the country.
  • CNN anchor and chief national correspondent John King will provide viewers with up-to-the-minute election analysis and reporting on the battleground House races from the CNN Magic Wall.
  • CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger, CNN political director David Chalian and CNN senior political commentator David Axelrod, will provide insight and analysis, as will CNN commentators Van JonesDavid UrbanJennifer Granholm, and Rick Santorum.

  • CNN’s Election Night in America coverage will be streamed live on CNN.com’s homepage, CNNgo, and across mobile devices via CNN’s apps for iOS and Android, without requiring log–in to a cable provider, beginning Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. ET, running through to Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. ET.

  • CNN en Español will provide special midterm election coverage all day on television and online at cnne.com/votolatino.
  • Beginning at 5 p.m. ET, anchors Juan Carlos Lopez, Alejandra Oraa, Fernando del Rincon and Guillermo Arduino will broadcast as results come in, with correspondents Ione Molinares, Gustavo Valdes, Maria Santana, Yilber Vega, Jose Manuel Rodriguez, Maria Alejandra Requena, Ana Maria Mejia, Jaqueline Hurtado, and Gonzalo Alvarado reporting from races across the country.

  •  Fox News Channel will present special live coverage of the 2018 midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 6 starting at 6 p.m. ET.
  • Co-anchored by chief political anchor and Special Report’s Bret Baier and The Story’s Martha MacCallum, America’s Election HQ: 2018 Midterms will provide viewers with the latest race calls on individual Senate and House races, as well as projections on the balance of power in both the Senate and the House via the Fox News Decision Desk.
  • Throughout the evening, America’s Newsroom’s Bill Hemmer will break down the results on the electronic Bill-board and Outnumbered Overtime’s Harris Faulkner will feature the Key Race Tracker, a data driven graphic showcasing where the key races stand.
  • Additionally, Fox News @ Night’s Shannon Bream will debut Fox News Voter Analysis Data, a system put in place in conjunction with the University of Chicago, that combines data from online and telephone polling, along with voters at the polls.
  • FNC will also hold an interactive viewing party on Fox Square, the plaza directly outside of the network headquarters on New York City’s Avenue of the Americas.
