Here’s How TV News Is Covering Tuesday’s State of the Union Address

After a brief delay, President Donald Trump will give his rescheduled State of the Union address, Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET. Broadcast, cable and streaming networks will give it plenty of attention.

But you probably knew that already.

As is our tradition, we have provided each network’s coverage plans below so you can decide where you’d like to watch the SOTU and the Democratic party response, along with the pre- and post-coverage.

ABC:

  • ABC News announced today special coverage of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address and the Democratic response by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019.
  • Chief anchor George Stephanopoulos will lead ABC TV coverage from 9 – 11 p.m., ET on ABC from Washington, D.C.m with World News Tonight anchor David Muir, chief global affairs correspondent and This Week co-anchor Martha Raddatz, chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl, senior White House correspondent Cecilia Vega, chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas, senior national correspondent Terry Moran and senior congressional correspondent Mary Bruce.
  • Special correspondent Matthew Dowd, political analyst Cokie Roberts, The View co-host Meghan McCain and contributors Donna Brazile and Chris Christie will provide analysis throughout the night.
  • Coverage kicked off on This Week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, Feb. 3.
  • Muir will anchor World News Tonight on Tuesday, and Stephanopoulos will anchor Good Morning America on Wednesday from Washington, D.C.
  • Nightline will devote its entire program to the State of the Union and the Democratic response following the speeches.
  • ABC News and FiveThirtyEight will provide live, comprehensive digital coverage with analysis of President Trump’s speech, policy proposals and how those might play into his 2020 re-election campaign.
  • ABC News Live — the network’s 24/7 breaking news and live events streaming channel —will have special coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET on Roku, Hulu, AppleTV, Amazon Fire TV, YouTube, Apple News, Facebook, Twitter, and the ABC News site and mobile phone apps.
  • Senior Washington reporter Devin Dwyer in Washington, D.C. will lead the streaming coverage and will be joined by ABC News’ powerhouse political team.
  • Episodes of daily newscast On Location will look ahead to President Trump’s speech and will analyze the key moments from his speech and the response the morning after exclusively for Facebook Watch.
  • ABC News Radio will provide live coverage of the address and response anchored by correspondent Aaron Katersky joined by correspondent Karen Travers from the White House, correspondent Brad Mielke and ABC’s Ali Rogin from the Capitol, political director Rick Klein and contributor Steve Roberts from Washington, D.C., and contributors Alex Castellanos and Kristen Soltis Anderson.
  • ABC News Radio will have a one-hour preview program (8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET) and will also feature multiple status reports each hour Tuesday evening and the morning after the address. The Start Here podcast will have a special episode on Wednesday, February 6 hosted by Mielke from the Capitol.
  • ABC NewsOne, the affiliate news service of ABC News, will provide full coverage with correspondents Lana Zak, Serena Marshall and Mona Kosar Abdi reporting from Washington, D.C., Travers, and Klein. NewsOne provides news content and services for more than 200 ABC affiliates and international news partners.

Bloomberg:

  • Bloomberg TV anchor David Westin will host coverage of the State of the Union address on Bloomberg Television and Radio from Washington starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.
  • Westin will be joined by Bloomberg White House reporters Margaret Talev and Shannon Pettypiece, along with Democratic strategist Steve McMahon and Republican strategist John Brabender. They will break down the issues critically important to the global business community, including analysis of President Trump’s trade and economic agenda.
  • Sound On with Kevin Cirilli will kick off Bloomberg Radio’s SOTU coverage with a preview at 5 p.m. ET on 99.1 in Washington.
  • TicToc by Bloomberg will have special live coverage of the State of the Union on Twitter, beginning with a pre-show at 8:30 p.m. ET featuring Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief, Craig Gordon and New York Bureau Chief, Jason Kelly.

CBS:

  • CBS News will deliver comprehensive coverage for President Trump’s second State of the Union address and the Democratic response on all broadcasts and platforms.
  • The Network’s primetime coverage will air Tuesday from 9 – 11 p.m. ET on the CBS Television Network with CBS Evening anchor Jeff Glor leading the coverage from Washington.
  • Glor will be joined by Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan; CBS News chief congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes; CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett; CBS News correspondent Nikole Killion; and CBS News political correspondent Ed O’Keefe.
  • CBS This Morning co-hosts Gayle King, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell and Bianna Golodryga will conduct newsmaking interviews, and the team of CBS News correspondents will provide the latest headlines surrounding the State of the Union.
  • The CBS Evening News will originate from Washington with special coverage ahead of the president’s address.
  • The team of CBS News correspondents will report the latest headlines, plus former Republican Arizona senator and CBS News contributor Jeff Flake will provide analysis.
  • CBSN will provide continuous, live coverage beginning at 5 p.m. ET, with a special edition of Red & Blue anchored by Elaine Quijano.
  • At 8 p.m. ET, Quijano and a panel of CBS News reporters and CBSN contributors will preview the speech and discuss the Trump administration’s policies since last year’s address.
  • Beginning at 9 p.m. ET, Quijano will anchor CBSN’s coverage of the State of the Union address and the Democratic response, after which CBSN will deliver comprehensive analysis.
  • CBS Newspath, CBS News’ newsgathering organization providing news and information to 200+ affiliates nationwide and to broadcasters around the world, will feature extensive coverage before and after the State of the Union address and Democratic response, as well as digital content following both speeches. CBS News correspondents Kenneth Craig and Natalie Brand will report live from Capitol Hill.
  • CBS News Radio will provide live, anchored coverage starting at 9 p.m. ET, led by CBS News correspondent Bill Rehkopf from Washington. Rehkopf will be joined by correspondents Steven Portnoy, Steve Dorsey and CBS News Radio political consultant Leonard Steinhorn. CBS News Radio will also provide short-form Special Reports and interviews leading up to and after the president’s address.

CNBC:

  • As the President prepares to deliver the State of the Union to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, CNBC brings viewers a deep dive into the key drivers of the American economy.
  • CNBC looks at the state of housing, retail, hiring, technology and more as reporters provide in-depth analysis of the state of the economy and the markets.
  • The State of the Union address will livestream on CNBC.com, as well as on CNBC’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages. CNBC.com’s politics team will be reporting news of the event from CNBC headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. in real-time.

CNN:

  • CNN will have live coverage of President Trump’s State of the Union and the Democratic Response tomorrow night with programming anchored by Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer, Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Chris Cuomo.
  • CNN’s wide array of political analysts and commentators will provide analysis and CNN correspondents will be live from the White House and Capitol Hill.
  • Cuomo Prime Time will pick up late night coverage along with CNN’s analysts and contributors.
  • On the digital front – CNN’s coverage of President Trump’s State of the Union address and the Democratic Response will be streamed live in its entirety to CNN.com’s homepage and across mobile devices via CNN’s apps for iOS and Android.
  • The State of the Union address and Democratic Response can also be viewed live, without requiring log–in to a cable provider, on CNNgo (at CNN.com/go on your desktop, smartphone, and iPad, and via CNNgo apps for Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast and Android TV).
  • The live stream will add to CNN Politics coverage, which will feature live updates with insightful enterprise and analysis, fact-checking, original video and data takes, enhancing viewers experience across platforms.

C-SPAN:

  • C-SPAN’s State of the Union programming will begin at 8 p.m. and will be LIVE on C-SPAN, C-SPAN.org and the C-SPAN Radio App.
  • Live coverage of President Trump’s speech will be shown in its entirety beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
  • C-SPAN will also have LIVE coverage of the Democratic response to be delivered by Stacey Abrams.

Fox Broadcasting:

  • Fox News Channel chief news anchor Shepard Smith will anchor separate live coverage beginning at 9 p.m. 
  • Analysis will be provided by RealClearPolitics’ A.B. Stoddard, along with reports from FNC correspondent Kristin Fisher from outside the Capitol.

Fox News Channel:

  • Beginning at 8:55 p.m. ET, Special Report’s Bret Baier and The Story’s Martha MacCallum will co-anchor the special coverage of President Trump’s State of the Union and the Democratic Party response live from Washington DC.
  • Analysis will be provided by Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace, The Ingraham Angle’s Laura Ingraham, The Daily Briefing’s Dana Perino, The Five’s Juan Williams and senior political analyst Brit Hume.
  • Additionally, chief White House correspondent John Roberts and chief Congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel will provide live reports from the White House and National Statuary Hall, respectively.

  • Additionally, Fox News Radio will offer coverage beginning at 8 p.m. ET, anchored by Fox News Radio’s national correspondent Jared Halpern and White House correspondent Jon Decker live from Washington, DC.
  • Fox News Radio’s Benson and Harf (6 – 8 p.m. ET), with Guy Benson and Marie Harf, will be co-hosting their nationally syndicated talk show live from Washington DC and Fox News Headlines 24/7 will provide updates every 15 minutes on SiriusXM Channel 115. The Fox News Rundown Podcast will provide a full recap of the address the following morning.

Fox Business:

  • Lou Dobbs will kick off coverage at 7 p.m. ET with a special edition of Lou Dobbs Tonight to discuss the issues facing the nation that are expected to be addressed in President Trump’s speech.
  • At 8 p.m. ET, Neil Cavuto will lead the network’s primetime coverage with a special three-hour edition of Cavuto: Coast to Coast.
  • Joining Cavuto to discuss the economic and political impact of the address will be FBN’s Trish Regan, alongside various guests including Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC), former Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), Nuveen Chief Equity Strategist Bob Doll, and former Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM).
  • Additionally, FBN correspondents Blake Burman and Edward Lawrence will be reporting from the White House and Capitol Hill, respectively.
  • At 11 p.m. ET, Regan will host a special primetime edition of Trish Regan Prime time, where she’ll be joined by a rotating panel of industry experts to get the political and international economic reaction to the address.
  • On Wednesday, global markets editor Maria Bartiromo will anchor a special edition of Mornings with Maria (6 – 9 a.m. ET), live from Washington, D.C., where she’ll interview leading politicos and business titans for their reaction to the address ahead of the market open.

NBC News & MSNBC:

  • NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt and Today co-anchor and NBC News chief legal analyst Savannah Guthrie, joined by Meet the Press moderator and NBC News political director Chuck Todd, lead NBC network coverage live from 30 Rock in New York City, on Tuesday beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. ET.
  • Coverage begins at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT on the NBC television network.
  • The Rachel Maddow Show’s Rachel Maddow and The 11th Hour’s Brian Williams lead MSNBC’s prime time coverage beginning at 8 p.m. ET, anchoring from New York City.   • Velshi, joined by a slate of special guests, will discuss the major issues from the president’s address as well as historic State of the Union moments, and presidential trivia.
  • NBCNews.com/SOTU will also offer complete coverage of the speech as well as the Democratic response, including livestreams of the network special report and NBC News Digital’s program. The site will also include speech highlights and reaction from Congress and 2020 candidates.  The livestream will also be available on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, as well as across OTT apps. NBC News’ Snapchat show Stay Tuned will provide previews of the speech on Monday and Tuesday with a full recap of the State of the Union and Democratic response on Wednesday. PBS:

  • PBS NewsHour will produce a prime time special broadcast for President Trump’s State of the Union on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 9 – 11pm ET.
  • Managing editor Judy Woodruff will anchor the broadcast, with correspondents Yamiche Alcindor and Lisa Desjardins reporting live from the White House and U.S. Capitol, respectively.
  • Joining Woodruff in studio will be syndicated columnist Mark Shields; the Cook Political Report’s Amy Walter; senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center Peter Wehner; senior adviser and national spokesperson for MoveOn Karine Jean-Pierre; and radio host and editor of the online journal American Greatness Chris Buskirk; and to remotely include Washington Post national political reporter and Washington Week moderator Robert Costa.

Telemundo:

  • The network special: Noticias Telemundo Presents: Trump, State of the Union, airs Tuesday live at 9 p.m./8 p.m. CT/6 p.m. PT
  • Noticias Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart will lead the coverage of President Donald Trump’s state of the union address in the company of analysts Carlos Curbelo and Hilda Solis, and Noticias Telemundo senior correspondent Lori Montenegro.
  • The president’s speech will be translated simultaneously into Spanish and will stream live on NoticiasTelemundo.com and Noticias Telemundo’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts, as well as via the Noticias Telemundo mobile app.

Univision:

  • Univision will air its special State of the Union coverage live coast to coast starting at 8:50 p.m. ET, 7:50 p.m. CT, 5:50 p.m. PT with Univision News anchors Ilia Calderón and Jorge Ramos.
  • Univision will also air the democratic response to the State of the Union address by Georgia ex-governor candidate Stacy Abrams, and the Spanish-language response by California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra.
  • Univision News guests include: Kevin de León, former Democratic leader of the State Senate in California; Carlos Diaz- Rocillo, former White House senior advisor; John Feeley, former U.S. ambassador and Univision political consultant
  • Xavier Becerra will also be one of the guests and will participate both before and after giving the Spanish-language democratic response via satelite.
  • Univision News correspondent Claudia Uceda will report live from the Capitol.
  • Livestream: UnivisionNoticias.com
  • Social media: Univision’s SOTU coverage will also be streamed via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
  • Live blog: Univision News will provide minute by minute updates, reporting, analysis and key facts through it liveblog.
  • Detector de mentiras (Lie detector): Truths, half-truths and false statements, political speeches tend to include all of them. Univision News will verify, explain and inform each of these happen. The fact-checking will also be integrated into Univision’s TV programming.
  • Annotated SOTU: Univision News will publish the an annotated version of the State of the Union address, with line by line comments from our political analysts.

Yahoo Finance:

  • Yahoo Finance will be live from the NASDAQ Marketsite with an expert financial analysis of the anticipated presidential address, before and following Tuesday’s State of the Union Address.
  • Tune-in at 8:30 p.m. EST to hear from Yahoo Finance’s editor in chief Andy Serwer, columnist and Trump expert Rick Newman, on-air finance and policy reporters Brian Cheung and Alexis Keenan, and markets reporter Scott Gamm.
  • The team will return for a post-State of the Union conversation, breaking down President Trump’s speech, and perhaps more notably, possible statements left on the cutting room floor.
  • From the financial impacts of another government shutdown, to President Trump’s potential meetings with Kim of North Korea and Xi of China, Americans can tune-in for unique coverage and a better grasp of how the State of the Union statements may impact their daily lives.
  • Earlier this month, Yahoo Finance extended its daily live programming to 8 hours which includes 6 daily shows and an additional special weekly program hosted by Yahoo Finance’s editor in chief, Influencers with Andy Serwer, on Thursdays at 5 p.m. ET.
  • Throughout the day, anchors and analysts provide expert commentary on breaking news, political stories, pop culture moments and the day’s stock market activity.
  • The special State of the Union livestream will air on Yahoo Finance, the Yahoo Finance app, Apple TV, and Yahoo Finance social channels including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

 

i24 News:

  • On Tuesday, Feb. 5, i24 News will run a special at 8 p.m. hosted by David Shuster that looks ahead at the speech but will largely examine President Trump’s foreign policies.
  • i24 will take the speech in its entirety including the Democratic response and stay on the air until at least 11 p.m.
  • i24 will at least two live positions from the Capitol with senior national correspondent Michael Shure and correspondent Mike Viqueira.
  • Additionally i24 will have Owen Alterman from their studios in Tel Aviv for analysis related to the Middle East and any mention of a peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians
  • Contributions from correspondents in New York and Tel Aviv will include packages related to Trump foreign affairs on: Russia, NATO/Europe, China/North Korea, and Israel/Middle East.
