Greta Van Susteren Joins Newsmax’s Nightly Lineup as Host of The Record

After spending time at CNN, Fox News and MSNBC during her journalism career, Greta Van Susteren is now headed to Newsmax, hosting a new show—The Record with Greta Van Susteren—that will lead the outlet’s nightly lineup.

The Record will debut Tuesday, June 14 and be based in D.C. It will be her third cable news show with “Record” in the title, following On the Record at Fox News and For the Record at MSNBC.

“With all that is going on in the world, I am getting back to my roots: a daily live news show with real reporting from the places where things are happening,” Van Susteren said in a statement.

She added, “I have been friends with [Newsmax CEO] Chris Ruddy for years, and he is giving me this great opportunity to return, giving me the complete freedom to cover the news that really matters to people. I have been impressed by Newsmax’s team and their success—and would love to be part of a news network that is really growing.”

Reports first surfaced last month that Van Susteren was in talks to join the conservative cable news outlet, but at the time, it was unclear what her role would be.

“No one in journalism better exemplifies Newsmax’s mission to provide fact-based news and fact-based opinion than Greta Van Susteren,” Newsmax Media CEO Chris Ruddy said in a statement. “We are so pleased and honored to have Greta lead our nightly news lineup of programs.”

Van Susteren has been working for Atlanta-based broadcast company Gray TV, which owns local stations in nearly 100 markets across the U.S. She joined Gray in February 2019 as a national political analyst—and now hosts Full Court Press With Greta Van Susteren, a Sunday political talk program that launched in September 2019 on Gray stations. Van Susteren also holds the title of Gray TV chief national political correspondent.

Her most recent stop in cable news was MSNBC in 2017, but it was a brief one: MSNBC canceled her daily program For the Record with Greta just six months after it launched. For the Record aired in MSNBC’s weekday 6 p.m. time slot, an hour now inhabited by The Beat with Ari Melber.

Prior to MSNBC, Van Susteren spent more than 14 years at Fox News as host of On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, which held the weekday 7 p.m. timeslot and was based out of Washington D.C. She departed Fox in September 2016, when a window in her contract allowed her to leave.

Before arriving at Fox News, Van Susteren was a host at CNN. A former trial attorney who rose to prominence on TV during the O.J. Simpson trial, she led two CNN shows—The Point With Greta Van Susteren (in primetime) and Burden of Proof, which was CNN’s daily legal show.
