Pulling back the curtain a bit: Every Thursday I get the ratings for the previous week’s network morning newscasts. Each network sends out an email touting their win or their growth. Today’s email from ABC News included, nine, count ’em, nine boldface pronouncements.

The most significant being this:

“GOOD MORNING AMERICA” RANKS #1 IN 17 MARKETS AROUND THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING: LOS ANGELES; CHICAGO; PHILADELPHIA; DALLAS; ATLANTA AND HOUSTON

For the week of August 13, 2007, ABC News’ “Good Morning America” continued to perform strongly against the competition and beat NBC’s “Today” in Total Viewers on both Thursday and Friday. Thursday: (ABC: 4.770 million vs NBC: 4.530 million) Friday: (ABC: 4.620 million vs NBC: 4.540 million.)

On Thursday, Diane Sawyer scored back-to-back exclusive interviews with both Lisa Marie Presley and Star Jones. Sawyer traveled to the historic Graceland Mansion to sit down with the daughter of Elvis Presley for an in-depth discussion on what life was like with “The King.” Sawyer also spoke with Star Jones – live and in-studio – about her dramatic weight loss and new Court TV talk show. On Friday, “GMA” concluded it’s “Best Burger Challenge” with chef Emeril Lagasse and welcomed The Beach Boys for some summer music live in Manhattan’s Bryant Park.

“GMA” beat NBC by 240,000 viewers on Thursday and 80,000 Friday. Compared to the same time last week, “GMA” slashed the Total Viewer gap with NBC’s “Today” 79% in Total Viewers and 54% in Adults 25-54. In addition, year-to-year, “GMA” cut the Total Viewer gap by 68% and 3% in the demo.

“Good Morning America” also gained +180,000 Total Viewers and +140,000 Adults 25-54 while NBC declined in both categories losing -270,000 Total Viewers and -160,000 Adults 25-54 (vs. same time last week.)

“Good Morning America” posted its best delivery in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 since the week of May 28, 2007 while NBC posted its lowest delivery in Total Viewers since the week of August 26, 1996 and worst demo delivery since the week of Christmas, 2006.

For the week, only 120,000 Total Viewers and 260,000 Adults 25-54 separated “GMA” and “Today”. “Good Morning America” also ranked #1 in an impressive 17 markets around the country, including: Los Angeles; Philadelphia; Dallas; Atlanta and Houston.
