Give Peter Jennings A Break

By Brian

Several e-mailers have criticized the coverage, on this blog and in TV columns, of Peter Jennings’ illness. “I believe we could do ourselves and Peter a favor of sensibility, if we stopped making a media story out of what has befallen him and understood that a human event was happening and left Peter and his family to the privacy they deserve. It is the only fair and decent thing to do if deceny is within our grasp,” a TV news veteran e-mailed last week. And today, the same insider responded to the items about Peter’s successor: “Stop dealing with Peter in the past tense. He is alive and going through a rough patch but that does not mean he is not coming back. Give it a rest and give him a break.”
