Ryan Smith, a 25-year-old staffer for 48 Hours, is in intensive care after a “gay bashing attack in the Caribbean vacation island of St. Maarten,” CBS4.com reports. Smith “has a fractured skull and has not been able to speak properly since the incident.”

Richard Jefferson, a senior producer for the weekend edition of CBS Evening News, “sustained severe cuts on the back of his head and his lower back.”

The two men were rushed to a medical center around 3:30 a.m. Thursday after being confronted by some people who called themselves “gay bashers.” Here’s the rest of the story.

The two staffers have been transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. “The staff at 48 Hours as been incredibly supportive,” a tipster says.
