Gallup: Distrust in the Media Reaches Record High

By Alex Weprin

A new poll released by Gallup shows that American distrust in the mass media has reached a record high. This is the fourth straight year that a  majority of respondents have said that they have little or no trust in the media, but the 57% who say that this year is a new record for the poll.

According to the poll, 48% of respondents say the media is too liberal, 15% say it is too conservative and 33% say it is “just right.”

Political party seemed to affect the responses, with Democrats and liberals having the most trust in the media, and Republican and conservatives having the least. Independents and moderates were, as expected, in between the two extremes.

59% of Democrats said they trusted the media, compared to 32% of Republicans. Likewise, 54% of self-described liberals had trust in the media, compared to 33% of self-described conservatives.

Lower-income Americans and those with  less education were more likely to trust the media than wealthier Americans and those with higher eduction.
