“Stanton’s mark on broadcast television is still evident,” Reuters reports. “In 1960 he initiated the first televised presidential debate, between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Kennedy’s more polished performance was credited with contributing to his narrow victory that year. Since then, televised debates among presidential candidates have been the highlight of the quadrennial campaigns.”
