First Lady Michelle Obama Among Those Attending Gwen Ifill’s Funeral

Thousands of mourners packed the Metropolitan AME church in Washington, DC Saturday to say goodbye to PBS NewsHour co-anchor Gwen Ifill who died last Monday. First lady Michelle Obama was in attendance, and former Attorney General Eric Holder read a message from Pres. Obama.

Holder also had a message for Ifill’s colleagues, which some also took as a reference to Pres.-elect Donald Trump.

Holder asked, “Will you cower? Will you normalize that which is anything but?” reports WRC.

HuffPost reports the remarks “brought knowing applause from the savvy D.C. crowd and sheepish nods from the famous reporters in the church.”

“We didn’t look like other anchor pairs — and we loved that,” said Ifill’s co-anchor Judy Woodruff in her eulogy. The duo were the first all-woman anchor team on network TV.

“I’m not going to say it in church, but there’s a very specific word for what Gwen could detect,” added Face the Nation moderator John Dickerson.
