Fire At Universal Studios

The news networks are covering a massive fire at the Universal Studios lot in Universal City this morning. The Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Daryl Jacobs told the AP at least one building had burned and as many as three blocks of movie facades were destroyed.

NBC’s Peter Alexander reported by phone for Weekend Today at 5:30amPT. FNC’s Adam Housley reported that the theme park is still set to open at 9amPT.

Late last year, NBC announced it was moving from its Burbank studios and building a new state of the art facility in nearby Universal City. That facility won’t be ready until 2011.

> Update: The park did not open today. Tonight’s MTV Video Music awards, originating from Universal Studios’ Gibson Amphitheater, will go on.
