Evening Newscasts See Best November in Years, But Continue to Lose Younger Viewers

By Chris Ariens

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” both saw their best November Sweeps in 7 years among total viewers. But both newscasts lost viewers in the target news demo of 25-54 viewers. “Nightly” was up +4% compared to the Nov. 2012 sweep in viewers, but was down -9% in the demo. CBS was up +7% in viewers and down -7% in the demo.

“ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” didn’t move the needle among viewers and lost -6% of the 25-54 viewers.

The drop in younger viewers can be attributed in part to the national elections held last November. “Nightly,” which remains the most-watched evening newscast, had its best advantage over “World News” since 2010. But among younger viewers, and for the 3rd November in a row, ABC cut its gap with “Nightly” earning its smallest November news demo margin since 2008.
