Evening News Ratings: Week of Nov. 20 and November Sweeps

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt wins the Thanksgiving holiday-shortened week, averaging 9.7 million viewers.

NBC was also the only program to see viewer growth vs. the same week last year. Nightly was up +1 percent in viewers, while ABC’s World News with David Muir was flat and CBS Evening News was down -12 percent. All three broadcasts were down in the demo with NBC and ABC down -3 percent and CBS down -14 percent.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, ABC’s and CBS’ weekly averages are based on two days (Mon-Tue), while NBC’s weekly average is based on three days (Mon-Tue and Fri).

The averages for the week of Nov. 20:

  • Total Viewers: NBC: 9.700M / ABC: 9.159M / CBS: 7.012M
  • A25-54 viewers: NBC: 1.448M / ABC: 1.318M / CBS: 1.011M

Meanwhile, Muir’s broadcast won its second consecutive November sweeps period in total viewers while Holt’s Nightly News was No. 1 in the demo, winning its 10th consecutive sweep among younger viewers.

World News Tonight was the only broadcast to grow its audience vs. November 2016, which was heavy with coverage of the election. ABC was up +4 percent in viewers, though down -4 percent in the demo. Nightly News was down -2 percent in viewers and down -10 percent in the demo and CBS Evening News, which gets a new anchor in Jeff Glor next week, was down -7 percent in viewers and down -14 percent in the demo.

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 8.956M / NBC: 8.364M / CBS: 6.632M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC: 1.818M / NBC: 1.910M / CBS: 1.403M
