Evening News Ratings: Week of June 15

By Chris Ariens

ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir was the No. 1 evening newscast in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo last week. Muir’s win comes as Lester Holt officially takes the reigns at NBC Nightly News. Savannah Guthrie filled in for the vacationing Holt last week.

ABC’s win, by +377,000 viewers, was its biggest over Nightly News in more than 7 years. World News Tonight also continues to lead season-to-date in the demo: a 19-year record. ABC was up +15 percent in viewers and up +11 percent in the demo vs. the same week last year. CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley was also up +13 percent in viewers and up +7 percent in the demo. Nightly was down -6 percent in viewers, but up +2 in the demo year-over-year.

ABC began gaining on NBC long before the Brian Williams scandal broke. In an interview with TVNewser yesterday, three hours before his first official broadcast, Holt told us, “It’s a tight race. We’re aware of it. I look at the ratings every day. But I can’t live and die by that.”
