Evening News Ratings: Week of August 14

By A.J. Katz

ABC World News Tonight with David Muir was the No. 1 evening newscast of the week in total viewers, while NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt held onto the top spot among adults 25-54.

Last week, each of the evening newscasts had busy weeks, respectively, reporting on the aftermath of the Charlottesville protests, terrorist attacks in Europe and the resignation of Steve Bannon from President Trump’s administration.

World News posted +1 percent year-over-year improvement in the key categories. The 7.9 million total viewer average represents the newscast’s largest overall audience in 10 weeks and delivering its strongest numbers in both key adult demos since April.

Season to date, WNT ranks No. 1 in total viewers for the first time at this point of the season in 21 years (+71,000 viewers).

NBC Nightly News finished No. 2 this past week in total viewers, but for the the 61st consecutive week, it was the evening newscast of choice among adults 25-54, which is the demo valued by news advertisers.

Nightly News broadcasted from Brazil for the 2016 Rio Olympics during the comparable week last year. This most certainly explains the double-digit year-over-year decline in overall audience.

The CBS Evening News anchored by Anthony Mason remains third across the board, and posted single-digit declines both in total viewers (-6 percent) and in the news demo (-7 percent).
