Evening News Ratings: Week of August 1

By A.J. Katz

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt was the top evening newscast for the week of August 1. Nightly was up 3 percent in total viewers, but fell 1 percent in the news demo from the same week in 2015. Additionally, Nightly News was the most-watched non-sports program on Sunday August 7th, and the 3rd-most-watched non-sports program for the week of August 1, behind America’s Got Talent (11.6 million total viewers) and The Bachelorette (8.6 million total viewers). Holt anchored the program live from Copacabana Beach on Thursday and Friday of last week, and anchors the newscast from Rio each night through August 19.

ABC World News Tonight with David Muir finished in second place this past week. WNT delivered the largest year-over-year bump in total viewers (+3 percent), an accomplishment considering it’s going up against Nightly News and in essence the Olympic Games. World News fell the most in the news demo from last year (-6 percent).

CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley seemed to take a bit of a hit. The program, which has seen pretty consistent year-over-year growth in 2016 to-date, fell 3 percent in total viewers and fell 3 percent in the news demo compared to the same week last year.
