All three evening newscasts are up slightly over last week. CBS says: “Season-to-date, the CBS Evening News increased its total viewers by +250,000 (7.63 million from 7.38 million) and increased +4% in households (5.4/10 from 5.2/10), while NBC and ABC decreased in total viewers and households compared to the same period last year.” Click continued for the full CBS press release. “CBS EVENING NEWS” GAINS NEARLY ONE MILLION VIEWERS COMPARED TO THE SAME WEEK LAST YEAR, WHILE “NIGHTLY NEWS” LOSES -430,000
AND “WORLD NEWS TONIGHT” LOSES -800,000

IN VIEWERS AND HOUSEHOLDS

In households, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH BOB SCHIEFFER has cut the gap with ABC’s “World News Tonight” nearly 75 % to -0.4 of a ratings point compared to a -1.5 rating point differential for the same week last year. The CBS EVENING NEWS also virtually halved the gap with NBC’s “Nightly News” to -0.9 rating point compared to -1.7 for the same period last year. In viewers, the CBS EVENING NEWS has narrowed the gap with ABC’s “World News Tonight” by 1.70 million viewers and with NBC’s “Nightly News” by 1.33 million viewers compared to the same week last year. In fact, the CBS EVENING NEWS has gained nearly one million viewers compared to the same week last year, while NBC has lost -430,000 and ABC has lost -800,000. The CBS EVENING NEWS is also the only network-evening newscast to post year-to-year and season-to-date gains in total viewers and households compared to the same period last year.

For the week of April 17, the CBS EVENING NEWS increased its total viewers by +900,000 (7.0 million from 6.10 million) and increased +11% in households (4.9/11 from 4.4/9). During the same period, NBC lost -430,000 viewers (8.19 million from 8.62 million) and decreased -5% in households (5.8/13 from 6.1/13), while ABC’s “World News Tonight” lost -800,000 viewers (7.64 million from 8.44 million) and decreased -10% in households (5.3/11 from 5.9/13).

The CBS EVENING NEWS has increased its total viewers in more weeks than any other evening newscast during the 2005-06 television season:

· The CBS EVENING NEWS is up in 22 of 31 weeks this season;
· NBC’s “Nightly News” is down in 29 of 31 weeks;
· ABC’s “World News Tonight” is down in 29 of 31 weeks and the last 28 weeks straight.

In the adults 25-54 demo for the week, the CBS EVENING NEWS is the only broadcast to post a gain, compared to the same week last year. CBS increased +6% (1.7/7 from 1.6/7), while NBC lost -4% (2.2/10 from 2.3/10) and ABC lost -9% (2.1/9 from 2.3/10).

Season-to-date, the CBS EVENING NEWS increased its total viewers by +250,000 (7.63 million from 7.38 million) and increased +4% in households (5.4/10 from 5.2/10), while NBC and ABC decreased in total viewers and households compared to the same period last year. NBC’s “Nightly News” lost -700,000 total viewers (9.63 million from 10.33 million) and decreased -7% in households (6.7/13 from 7.2/14). ABC’s “World News Tonight” also showed season-to-date losses: it lost -920,000 total viewers (8.61 million from 9.53 million) and decreased -9% (6.0/12 from 6.6/13) in households.
