As has become the norm in recent years, there was a split decision in the evening news ratings race. ABC World News Tonight with David Muir was No. 1 in total viewers, while NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt was No. 1 among adults 25-54 for the 1st quarter of 2019.

World News Tonight earned its largest advantage over NBC and CBS in 23 years when it came to overall audience, averaging 9.32 million total viewers for the quarter. The ABC evening newscast has won the last 8 quarters in total viewers– since Q2 2017.

World News Tonight also slashed its margin with NBC Nightly News in the key A25-54 demo. The newscast was only -10,000 A25-54 viewers vs. NBC in Q1 2019. It was -121,000 A25-54 viewers vs. NBC in Q1 2018, a change of 92 percent.

Despite all the accolades, World News was actually -1 percent in total viewers and -1 percent in the key A25-54 vs. Q1 2018.

On the downside, Nightly was -2 percent in total viewers, and -6 percent in A25-54 viewers vs. its Q1 2018 delivery, and the newscast has been finishing second in the demo recently, as we’ll show below.
