WFAN is the No. 1 sports talk radio station in New York City, but ESPN’s Mike and Mike (Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic) beat out Boomer and Carton (Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton) to win the 18-34 male demographic for the first time during April, an indication that the World Wide Leader could be poised to challenge the longtime stranglehold of WFAN in the Big Apple.
ESPN Radio General Manager David Roberts told the (N.Y.) Daily News that the ability to attract younger listeners is encouraging.
(Those numbers) could also indicate that listeners who didn’t grow up assuming WFAN is synonymous with sports talk in New York might be open to alternatives – particularly one tied to the country’s best-known sports media brand, ESPN.Roberts acknowledges that right now, WFAN is still on top. It can, he says, become a contest.
