Christchurch, New Zealand – leveled by an earthquake in Late February – could be ready to host World Cup rugby matches as planned this fall. Prime minster John Key said holding the games at the Lancaster Park stadium would let the world know the city was back. It’s not a sure thing, however.
“There’s a series of different boxes that will need to be ticked before we can say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ That work (on the stadium) is happening. If it doesn’t pass that standard then obviously the Cup has to be moved, if it does then we can work through the other logistical issues. We’ve already made inquiries about cruise ships (for accommodation) and that’s entirely possible, and that’s not a bad place to stay. Even if it costs a bit more, we might be prepared to accommodate that cost if it means holding the Cup in Christchurch.”
A total of seven matches, including two quarterfinals, are scheduled to be held at the stadium.
