Don’t Blame Katie; Blame America’s Need For A Low-Pitched Anchor Voice

Katie Couric “is never never never ever never ever never ever going to pull it off,” Cindy Adams writes. “Solo women’s network news anchor? No. Not. Nyet. Nisht.”

But it’s “not her fault.” It’s the fault of CBS, publicity overkill, perkiness, Halloween editions of Today, oh and: “Her speech level is pitched too high. Harsh news, life’s gritty realities, Iraq’s body count must be delivered in lower notes. It adds to the story’s weight. If that’s sexist, sorry. It’s fact.”

But it’s not her fault! She’s a pioneer, Adams says: “It’ll just take time for the first lady anchor. That’s America’s failure — not hers. Because of her, the next woman down the line will make it.” Here’s the column…
