Diane Sawyer Lands First TV Interview with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

Update: as the Tucson Sentinel notes and ABC News confirms, the special may or may not include an interview with Giffords on camera. ABC says it will ahve exclusive footage of her recovery, and that Sawyer will sit down with Giffords and Kelly on-camera. The extent of her participation will be dependent on how far along she is in her recovery process.

“ABC World News” anchor Diane Sawyer has secured the first interview with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, former astronaut and Space Shuttle commander Mark Kelly. The interview will air as part of a primetime special Monday, November 14 at 10 PM ET.

While Kelly has spoken out since the horrific shooting in Tucson in January (he gave his first interview since the shooting to Sawyer as well), Giffords has been slowly recovering during that time. Aside from a brief appearance in the Capitol chamber for the debt ceiling vote, Giffords has remained out of the public eye. The ABC interview will be her first TV interview since the shooting. The special will also document her recovery, as well as her courtship and marriage of Kelly.

The interview is tied to the release of a new book being released by Kelly and Giffords, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope. The book will be released the next day, November 15.
