Craig Melvin Has Been Named Today Show’s News Anchor

By A.J. Katz

When we heard Craig Melvin would be leaving his gig as co-host of Saturday Today last month, we knew something was up.

Indeed, the Today show team announced on-air this morning that Melvin has been named news anchor for the flagship 7 – 9 a.m. weekday edition of Today, joining Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb at the table each weekday morning.

Melvin previously was a top candidate for a Today Show anchor seat late last year, when NBC fired Matt Lauer late last fall amid the sexual harassment scandal. The network ultimately promoted Kotb to the job instead.

Melvin will continue to anchor MSNBC weekday afternoon coverage.

*The post has been updated to reflect that Melvin is “news anchor,” not “co-anchor.”
