Couric Eyes Hour-Long Evening News…Every Night

By Chris Ariens

Tonight, as last night, Katie Couric will anchor an hour-long Evening News. But Couric tells the New York Observer’s Felix Gillette she’d like to anchor an hour every night. “I really would like more time” says Couric, “Because I think time is not our friend at the Evening News.”

Couric, often the subject of news herself, transformed the campaign of John McCain, so said her colleague Bob Schieffer during coverage last night.

“Those interviews that you did with her, I mean, she made a terrible impression in those interviews and I think that’s when the bloom came off this rose right there,” Schieffer said, adding, “And I would say that even if you were not sitting here.”

Couric tells Gillette, “The interviews were important. I don’t mean to sound too self-congratulatory, because anytime a candidate does an interview, if it’s properly done, it should be revealing. Quite frankly, I’ve been disappointed by the lack of persistence I’ve seen in a lot of political interviews this season.”
