CNN Shutting Down CNN Radio Unit

By Alex Weprin

CNN is shutting down its CNN Radio unit. Today will be the last day of broadcasts for the department, which focused primarily on long-form audio news stories.

Staff for the unit were told about the change today, and their last day will be Friday. TVNewser hears that approximately 17 staffers are affected, though some may end up getting jobs elsewhere in the company.

“The company completed a review of its radio business and has made the decision to cease production of CNN Radio podcasts, effective immediately,” reads a CNN statement.

CNN Radio has been digital-only for the last year or so, when Dial Global dropped its terrestrial distribution, replacing it with NBC News Radio. CNN Radio cut around half of the positions in the radio unit at the time, but maintained a staff to produce digital audio content such as podcasts.

CNN Radio was responsible for three of the six Edward R. Murrow Awards the channel received earlier this month.
