CNN Partners With Georgia Tech to Study Media Outlets’ Drone Use

CNN and Georgia Tech are launching a joint research project to evaluate the use of drones for media organizations. The research team — staffed by senior members of CNN’s newsgathering team and researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute — will share the project’s findings with the FAA, which is currently considering drone regulations for media outlets.

“Our hope is that by working cooperatively to share knowledge, we can accelerate the process for CNN and other media organizations to safely integrate this new technology into their coverage plans,” CNN senior vice president, legal David Vigilante said in a statement.

At the TVNewser Show in April, Ian Hannah from the Society of Professional Drone Journalists flew a drone around the New Yorker Hotel, saying the unmanned aircraft will eventually be “if not everywhere … very common.” Watch:
