CNN Expanding “On The Story;” Show To Air From GWU On Saturday Evenings

By Brian

CNN is expanding its weekend program “On The Story,” adding male correspondents, and moving it to The George Washington University auditorium that Crossfire used to call home. The show will air Saturdays at 7pm, replacing “Capital Gang,” which concludes on June 25. It will reair in its current Sunday morning timeslot.

“The one-hour program will now include male correspondents and more international correspondents on the frontlines of the war in Iraq and other global hotspots, as well as never-before-seen raw footage, reporter diaries and questions from viewers and the studio audience at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.,” the press release says. Christiane Amanpour will participate on a regular basis.

“The new program will have a broader scope and the potential to involve all of our correspondents around the world,” Jon Klein said in a staff e-mail this morning. His full e-mail is after the jump…

FWD: Message from Jon Klein

As we bid farewell to Capital Gang, we will be expanding On the Story and airing it Saturday nights at 7 p.m. as well as in its Sunday time slot. The new program will have a broader scope and the potential to involve all of our correspondents around the world.

Christiane Amanpour will participate on a regular basis offering her unique insights and perspective along with a rotation of correspondents each week.

A program offering behind-the-scenes accounts of news events is rare in our business, but it is the kind of context that CNN is uniquely positioned to offer viewers. We also should not lose sight of this as a valuable opportunity to display transparency in our reporting, which is a key objective for me, CNN, and, frankly, anyone in the news business today.

I thank Lucy Spiegel and Charley Keyes for their work on transforming this innovative program and I encourage you to forward them suggestions as you come across good stories to be featured on the show.

Please see the press release below that will be released today.
