Chris Matthews On “The Washington Read”

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has a fun essay about “The Washington Read” on the front of the Washington Post’s Outlook section this morning. He’s come up with four options to devouring books and finding the best morsels:

The first option is reading the whole book. The second, and probably more popular ,is to “go through it.” Matthews says “this second method of book assault relies on a bit of luck, jumping from page to page, hoping to spot the interesting stuff.”

The third option is “to start a book at the beginning and then put it aside,” because “you can know whether it’s well written from the first several pages.” And the fourth is “desperation:” “Ask the publicist to find out which chapter the writer considers best or most emblematic — what journalists call the ‘nut’ of an article.” Here’s the full piece…
