Chris Matthews Apologizes For ‘Sandy’ Comment: ‘It was a terrible thing to say, period.’

By Alex Weprin

MSNBC host Chris Matthews publicly apologized for his off the cuff comments on Hurricane Sandy on election night. Following President Obama’s reelection, just before, 3 AM ET, Matthews said that he was “so glad” for Hurricane Sandy, because it “brought in possibilities for good politics.” He clarified that he meant that it brought people of different political persuasions together.

On his latest program, he apologized for the comments

“It was a terrible thing to say, period,” Matthews said. “I was too deeply enmeshed in political thinking, deep in a world of numbers and issues and people and stakes and focused on who would win and who would lose but I left out the number one job of people on-air, on TV or radio to think about the real lives of people, their losses, their friends who died in this disaster.”
