Charlie Gibson Talks Retirement with Barbara Walters on ‘The View’

Charlie Gibson, who’s in his last week at “World News,” sat down with the Barbara Walters on “The View” this morning to discuss his imminent departure.

Walters introduced her “friend and colleague,” and asked why he was leaving.

“There is another chapter in life and I’m anxious to do it,” Gibson said. He added that there are a lot of things he still wanted to do and that his “World News” position is “binary, you either do it full bore or you don’t do it at all.”

He told the hosts he plans to travel and is considering working on college campus for a semester or returning to business. He also said he’ll be able to vote, something he’s abstained from while working as a journalist.

When asked how he felt about his final show, he said, “I love what I do…so that’s hard. But once I get past Friday and I begin to focus on what’s to come and what’s the future and not what’s the past, I think it will be much easier.”

The interview also gave one of Gibson’s longtime colleagues the opportunity to publicly say goodbye.

“We’ve gone through many years together with great affection and I will miss you a lot,” Walters said. “Diane Sawyer is going to take your place starting Monday. But you know how I feel about you. You may not be choked up, but I am.”

“I feel the same way about you,” Gibson said.
