CBS Evening News Bolsters Its Digital Unit

By A.J. Katz

The CBS Evening News is growing its digital presence, and ep Mosheh Oinounou announced earlier today that the newscast has made two new additions its digital team.

Shayna Freisleben is joining the CBS Evening News as a digital producer. Freisleben was a part of the 2014 launch of CBSN, and helped run the streaming news service’s social feed.

Oinounou and Freisleben know each other well. Oinounou was executive producer for CBSN before taking over for Steve Capus as CBS Evening News ep back in January. Freisleben starts today.

Gena Wolfson is also joining the broadcast as a digital producer. Wolfson comes from SiriusXM, where she managed social content for the company’s feeds with a focus on politics. She begins next Monday.

According to sources, this is just the first step with more digital hires to come.

CBS re-airs Evening News weekdays at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on CBSN, and Oinounou told Variety late last week that viewers should expect to see “digital-streaming programs to podcasts to a much more comprehensive social strategy” for the show in the not too distant future.

Here’s the internal memo Oinounou sent to staff this morning:

Part of our strategy outlined below is to continue to build a larger digital and social presence for the broadcast.

With that in mind, I am happy to announce 2 new additions to help lead our digital team today:

–Shayna Freisleben is joining us as a Digital Producer from CBSNews.com. Shayna was a key part of the CBSN launch in 2014 and the strategy and growth of the CBS News social feeds on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the CBS News Dot Com the last 4 years. She has an incredible eye for spotting stories and will be working on how we can expand the Evening News digital footprint on multiple platforms. Before joining CBS, she worked for CNN. Shayna started with Evening News this morning.

–Gena Wolfson is joining us as a Digital Producer from XM/Sirius radio where she was most recently managing and creating social content for their feeds with a focus on politics. She brings experience in the newsroom as well as the field where she shot, produced and edited content for several platforms.  She previously worked at MSNBC, Yahoo and NBC News. She will start with us on Monday June 18th.

Looking forward to Shayna and Gena taking things to the next level and working with producers in all of our bureaus on how to customize their stories for social, maximize their reach beyond the broadcast and work on original content ideas around streaming, podcasts and beyond.

More to come soon.

Welcome Shayna and Gena!

Mosh
