The cable news networks all covered the speeches from Selma, Alabama Saturday, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” march over the Edmund Pettis Bridge–images of the violence marchers were met with was broadcast across the country in 1965, ultimately leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
Today, MSNBC, Fox News, Al Jazeera America and CNN all took President Obama’s remarks live, as the president told the thousands who had gathered for the ceremony near the bridge, “the Americans who crossed 
this bridge, they were not physically imposing, but they gave courage to millions. They held no elected office. But they led a nation.”
President Obama was introduced by Rep. John Lewis, who was one of the marchers fifty years ago, and was left bloodied by troopers who tried to stop the historic march from Selma to Montgomery. Lewis told the crowd he would never have believed in 1965 that one day he’d be back in the spot to introduce the country’s first African-America president.
