Brzezinski: Who Could Be Surprised by Stephanopoulos’ Clinton Ties?

By Mark Joyella

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday, co-host Mika Brzezinski questioned much of the outrage and shock over the disclosure last week that ABC’s George Stephanopoulos had made contributions to the Clinton Foundation. “He worked tirelessly to elect Bill Clinton. He served under Bill Clinton. Who would be so surprised he has ties to the Clintons?”

In a conversation with The Washington Post‘s David Ignatius, Brzezinski said it’s clear Stephanopoulos should have disclosed his donations–especially during his interview with “Clinton Cash” author Peter Schweizer.

Ignatius meanwhile questioned the emergence of top-line network journalists who “made their bones” not as reporters, but as political operatives. “I think all the bosses at the networks need to look at that more closely.”

In a column today, Fox News host Howard Kurtz says “the crux of Stephanopoulos’ problem is that he’s never fully been able to shake his partisan past as a Clinton Democrat—and deepened that wound by giving money to the one charity that should have been off-limits to him.”

The New York Post‘s Page Six reports ABC is hoping the Stephanopoulos story “doesn’t spiral into a full-blown Brian Williams-style disaster,” according to an unnamed source. “If more information comes out about George’s ties to the Clintons, things could get worse.”
