Brokaw on Williams: ‘This Is a Really, Really Serious Case’

By Mark Joyella

In an event Monday night at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, NBC News vet Tom Brokaw talked in detail about Brian Williams and his future at NBC, calling it a “really, really serious case” and urging people to respect the process that is underway at the network:

“We owe it to everybody–including Brian and his family and certainly the people who work at NBC News and risk their lives every day, and to the integrity of NBC News–to let the process play out, to hear what the final conclusions are and then deal with it at that point.”

Brokaw, who described his relationship with Williams as “cordial,” said the scandal had led “bloggers” to go into “Defcon One.” He called out reporter Bryan Burrough, who wrote a splashy–but unsourced–story in Vanity Fair about NBC and Williams. “The reporter never, ever picked up the phone and asked me if I said something…it was outrageous.”
