Bob Schieffer Pinch-Hits After Helen Thomas Dropped as Graduation Speaker

CBS Newsman Bob Schieffer will now be the commencement speaker at Sunday’s graduation at Bethesda, Maryland’s Walt Whitman High School.

That honor was supposed to go to former Hearst News Service White House correspondent Helen Thomas. The school dropped Thomas after her controversial comments about Jews living in Israel.

Whitman principal Alan Goodwin describes Schieffer as a “journalist of prominent stature in the community.”
