Bob Schieffer, whose Face the Nation Sunday morning program finished second last week in total viewers — coming within 230,000 viewers of first-place Meet the Press — is profiled by Marketwatch‘s Jon Friedman.
Excerpts of what Schieffer had to say:
• On his interview of former VP Dick Cheney last week, in which Schieffer asked Cheney if the GOP would be better off with radio host Rush Limbaugh or former Secretary of State Colin Powell (Cheney chose Limbaugh): “I’ve never done anything that had as much resonance…It was all over cable television.”
• On what he would have done differently during the interview: “I wondered whether there was a difference of opinion between him and (George W.) Bush…I wish I’d asked that. Ah, there’s always that one question you don’t ask.”
• On “the most unexpected moment of [his] career,” as Friedman asks, Schieffer says it was when President Clinton’s lawyer Bob Bennett was on Face to address Paula Jones’s claims that Clinton had ‘unique characteristics’ and said, “‘I just want to say that the president is normal in size, shape and direction.’ My mouth just dropped open when he said it. He said it on live television!”
• On who his “number 1 get” would be for Face: “‘I wouldn’t mind getting Michelle Obama, unless I could get the dog,’ Schieffer laughed.”
