There’s a lot to bemoan about television news — “but take a look at two genuine, bona fide, finely crafted news programs that are thriving, and thriving despite predictions, not so long ago, that both would either prostitute themselves, fail in the ratings, or both,” Tom Shales writes in TV Week.

He’s talking about Nightline and This Week, both on ABC. He says Nightline “has survived its initial case of post-Koppel stress disorder and emerged a solid, ambitious news broadcast, one that does multiple topics on most nights and usually does them well.” And he thinks This Week, with host George Stephanopoulos, “is getting to be almost as much of a must-see proposition as Brinkley was.” Here’s the full column…
