Anchor/Lawyer Chris Cuomo Challenges Alabama Justice Over Gay Marriage

By Brian Flood

Fordham Law class of ’95 graduate and “New Day” co-anchor Chris Cuomo donned his barrister suit this morning during an interview/debate with Roy Moore, the chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.  Moore says he will continue to fight efforts to implement same-sex marriage in his state even if the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of marriage equality.

Moore repeatedly told Cuomo he was “incorrect” eventually interrupting Cuomo asking, “You wanna hear my answer, or you wanna keep talking?”

They argued the differences between racial discrimination vs. sexual discrimination. And when Moore asked Cuomo if he would have followed the orders in the Dred Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson rulings, two 19th century Supreme Court decisions that upheld slavery and segregation. Cuomo was quick to answer: “I’m not the chief justice of the Alabama. It’s not my place to answer.”
