Al Jazeera Expected to Cut Hundreds of Jobs

By Mark Joyella

Al Jazeera will cut hundreds of jobs–perhaps up to 1,000 worldwide–in a reported effort to trim budgets at the Qatari-owned news network.

According to The Guardian, the network’s U.S.-based Al Jazeera America will be spared from the cuts.

The newspaper reports falling oil prices and a possible “radical change” in investment strategy may force the job cuts–and could signal a larger shift away from massive investment in news by the Qatari government:

An internal email at al-Jazeera has already been prepared which warned some staff to expect “painful cuts”. There is a huge amount of confusion ahead of any final decision being made by the senior executive team.
