Al Jazeera’s AJ+ released a video sarcastically titled, “Americans Show Why USA Is The #1 Country In The World.” The video mocks Americans for “having the most incarcerated people in the world,” being overweight and the nation’s gun ownership rates. The video also takes jabs at America’s porn production, teen moms and racism, among other things.
AJ+ is the Qatar-owned network’s San Francisco-based digital-media platform. An Al Jazeera spokesman said:
AJ+ is a social media outlet that produces videos which are often humorous and satirical in tone. It is editorially distinct from other Al Jazeera channels such as Al Jazeera America, and has a different purpose in the media landscape. One of the things that defines America is free speech. The Americans in San Francisco who made this July 4th video are entitled to speak about their country. Similar videos have been done in this style about issues in other countries, and the network houses all opinions without necessarily endorsing them.
