Aftermath: FNC Medical Contributor “Felt Compelled” To Help Triage Patients

“A day after the levees broke, submerging New Orleans, Dr. Manny Alvarez prepared to head south. He arrived in Baton Rouge, about 80 miles from New Orleans, last Thursday, and headed to the River Center, a convention center housing more than 6,000 evacuees.

Alvarez, who traveled as a medical contributor for Fox News Channel, began to interview victims and prepare to deliver news. But after a few hours, the doctor in him took over.

“I just felt compelled,” said Alvarez, chairman of Hackensack University Medical Center’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, who returned home Monday. “Between my shootings … because they didn’t have a lot of doctors there, I helped out.”
