The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel‘s Mike Drew draws parallels between media coverage of the Gulf Coast and Vietnam:

“As in the Vietnam War, when Democratic President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his generals obfuscated daily, the tube brought the gory facts into America’s living rooms.”

And: “To longtime news junkies, the coverage recalled the momentous moment that scrupulously neutral CBS anchor Walter Cronkite turned against Johnson on Vietnam.”
