(April 29, 2010, New York, NY) – Charles Herman, an experienced news producer from ABC News, has been named Business and Economics Editor for WNYC Radio, announced Dean Cappello, Chief Creative Officer and Senior Vice President of Programming for WNYC.

Herman will help define and articulate WNYC’s focus on providing New York and the nation with business and economic coverage. The role was created in anticipation of the station’s upcoming coverage of the midterm elections in Albany and the 2012 Presidential election. Herman will work with WNYC’s award-winning news team and act as a resource to The Brian Lehrer Show, The Leonard Lopate Show, The Takeaway, and other WNYC programs that present business and economic coverage.

“WNYC intends to be a leader in news, perspective, and analysis on business and the economy,” said Cappello. “Charlie provides significant leadership on that front. He brings not only broad coverage experience of network journalism but a real understanding of how the individual stories – of business leaders, of employees, and of industries in transition – breathe life and relevance into the numbers and charts. I’m excited to welcome him to the WNYC team.”

“I’m equally excited to join WNYC Radio as it expands its coverage of business and economic news,” said Herman. “Public radio listeners are passionate about their stations. WNYC in particular has such a strong connection to the local community, I am looking forward to reporting on those stories – from local to national – that matter to the station’s listeners.”

Herman brings a breadth of experience to the position, having worked extensively with ABC News in four cities during the past 15 years. He has spent the last five years overseeing the Business News Unit in New York, providing editorial guidance, reporting and direction for business, economic and financial news, especially during the financial crash on Wall Street and the recession. Prior to that, Herman worked with ABC News as Producer for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Nightline, Good Morning America and Weekend News. He has been recognized with a Business News Emmy for a series about disappearing pensions, and shared a George Foster Peabody Award and an Alfred I. DuPont Award with the ABC news division for coverage of the September 11 events.
