’48 Hours’ Launches New Franchise Based on Unsolved Murders

The team behind “48 Hours” is launching a new, short-run series focusing on unsolved murders. The first episode, “48 Hours: Cold Case: Who Killed Amy Gellert?” airs on Saturday at 10pmET.

Each edition of “48 hours: Cold Case” goes deep inside the investigation of a long-unsolved murder, beginning with the tragic 1994 murder of Amy Gellert. The “48 Hours” team hopes to have at least three similar specials each television season, beginning in the fall.

“There’s a long history of cases being solved, reopened or overturned because of the reporting of our team on 48 Hours,” said senior executive producer Susan Zirinsky. “We believe that our original reporting on these unsolved cases may lead to someone in the audience coming forward with new information that could lead to closure for the families involved.”

Correspondent Erin Moriarty will explore Gellert’s murder, which occurred when she interupted a home invasion at her parent’s house in Cocoa Beach, Florida. “48 Hours” will use its social media presence to encourage viewers to help solve the case.

“Our audience is savvy and it’s quite possible they’ll spot something investigators haven’t considered, or perhaps they know someone involved,” Zirinsky said.
