The Academy Award nominations were revealed in Los Angeles this morning, and TV news featured in at least two of the nominations. Dan Gilroy picked up a nomination for Original Screenplay for the film “Nightcrawler,” the Jake Gyllenhaal film about an overnight TV news stringer selling ever more lurid crime video to a Los Angeles television station.
Laura Poitras‘ documentary on Edward Snowden, “Citizenfour”, was nominated in the Documentary Feature category, where it is considered a very strong contender. The story, which follows Snowden’s involvement with journalist Glenn Greenwald, led to Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting by The Washington Post and The Guardian.
