Glenn Weiss, who won the outstanding directing for a variety special Emmy, concluded his acceptance speech by proposing onstage to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, in what appeared to be an Emmy Awards first.

Weiss, who won for directing this year’s Oscar ceremony on ABC, talked about his mother, who had died just two weeks ago. He said that part of his heart is “broken.
