Soft Preview for Fox’s Glee

Highly touted new Fox drama Glee, which previewed out of the final American Idol performance show on Tuesday (and airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. this fall out of the live So You Think You Can Dance results show) got off to a soft start.

Glee was sampled by 9.62 million viewers, with a 3.9 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. on May 19, according to Nielsen Media Research data, placing it third in the hour in total viewers (behind the season finales of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and CBS’ The Mentalist), and second in the demo.

On paper that sounds promising.  But retention out of American Idol (Viewers: 23.93 million; A18-49: 3.9/10 at 8 p.m.) was just 40 percent in total viewers and 45 percent among adults 18-49.
